'Stranger Things' star Joe Kerry 'got obliterated by Piha waves' before playing Laneway

A true kiwi welcome.

Joe Kerry, known as Djo in the music world and Steve Harrington in the 'Stranger Things' universe, made a wee stop in New Zealand to perform here at Laneway, and of course, chat with us.

He yarned with us about all sorts: His new song ‘Basic Being Basic’, the various fan edits of him, his Superbowl prediction, goss from the wrap party for 'Stranger Things', our beautiful country - and he even gave Dan Webby's wife a call.

No one loves hearing more about their own country than Kiwis, which is why we freaked out at the mention of Piha Beach and Joe’s thoughts on Aotearoa.

“The food is way better than in the United States, the beaches are fantastic," he said. We'll take that as a win.

He talked about his great, but also not-so-great experience out at Piha beach.

"It was really cool," he said, before admitting he "got obliterated by waves".

Joe said he could "feel the riptide at his feet", adding that he heard the beach was "very dangerous", which we all know to be true from the iconic TV show 'Piha Rescue'.

Of course, our very own Dan went and put his foot in it by telling Joe: “People die weekly there, you’re lucky you’re still here.”

Yeah, nice one, Dan - not exactly the advertisement for NZ we were hoping for.

Joe also made an impromptu phone call to Dan's wife, Hannah after he explained Joe was her "ultimate hall pass"

Check out all the awkwardness from that moment here:
