Rihanna didn't get paid for that Super Bowl Halftime Show

Thanks to a long-standing NFL rule, Rihanna doesn't quite make it on the payroll

By now most people would've seen the stunning performance from Rihanna at this year's Super Bowl Halftime Show.

While there was an estimated 200 million people expected to tune into the performance, surprisingly Rihanna doesn't actually receive a bumper-sized paycheck.

It's all down to a long-standing policy from the NFL, that states the league will cover all production costs (including travel), but this does not include paying the performers in a typical way. Instead, they get paid in...exposure.

When Lady Gaga performed the Halftime Show in 2017, her album sales jumped by 1,000%, while in 2020 when Jennifer Lopez performed, she gained 2.3 million new followers across her social media.

The Super Bowl is likely to be among Rihanna's biggest shows, which will make her record sales skyrocket. We will just have to wait and see how well her 'payday' is.
