REVIEW: The ‘Wicked’ movie isn’t just for musical theatre kids

Bear with me on this one…

Even if you have been living under a rock, I’m sure the Wicked phenomena has reached your ears, eyes and if you’re me… your soul.

If you’ve found yourself thinking “I don’t even understand the Wicked lore”, don’t worry - you don’t have to! And anyway, I’ve got you covered.

After getting along to watch it last night, I’m still wiping away most of my tears today.

I went with a few friends (one of whom spoilt the cameo appearance 10 seconds before it happened) and most of us were theatre kids, but the few that weren’t were really curious if they would even like this movie if they hadn’t seen the original show on Broadway or ‘The Wizard of Oz’ film..

The short answer is YES.

I’ve seen countless musicals and Broadway shows, and in my opinion, the film captures more than just the musical element from the original show.

It’s going to resonate with any human who enjoys cinematography, screenplay, and more than ever, it reminds us that Ariana Grande can ACT and SING!

From being in my all time top five performers, she has now rightfully moved up to top three, without a doubt.

Broadway veteran Cynthia Erivo - one more award away from becoming an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony winner) - comes back to our screens and absolutely dominates every scene she’s in, bringing the younger and older generations together in awe of her raw talent.

‘Bridgeton’ star Jonathan Bailey also shines as part of the supporting cast, and yes he is just as beautiful as we remember - keep an eye out for his sexy footwork in ‘Dancing Through Life’.

If swelling music makes you feel a type of way, this movie prides itself in making you feel everything the characters sing, as well as explaining the scene and emotions in the scene, so even if you haven't seen the Broadway show, you’ll understand what's happening.

Of course, ‘Popular’ and ‘Defying Gravity’ are the ones that everyone knows, but after the movie, tracks such as ‘The Wizard and I’ and ‘What is this Feeling’ are becoming fan favorites.

With that being said, if you still need convincing or a short explanation, you can watch one here, and if you’re a musical theatre kid like me, rova has an original playlist with all your faves right here!
