NZ Setting Precedent With World First Young Deer Farmer Competition

"They loved it... they were all having a lot of fun together and laughing," Tapley says.

The inaugural Young Deer Farmer Competition, held at Peel Forest, has ignited enthusiasm in the deer farming industry, drawing 22 young participants eager to showcase their skills. 

Organised by the South Canterbury/North Otago Deer Farmers Association, the event included challenges like quizzes, velvet grading, and tractor driving, fostering camaraderie among participants. 

Chair of the Association Mark Tapley explains how the event will run, including the different rounds of challenges the contestants must face and how they will be judged on each round.

He explains the long-term goals of the initiative, aiming to attract more young people to the deer farming industry and ensure a vibrant future for deer farming.
