McKay on Sport: Free-to-air sport on the up, Black Ferns win & Warriors support stays strong

REX host Dominic George catches up with fellow host and sports guru Hamish McKay for a weekly sports rundown.

Every Friday Dominic George catches up with REX host and sports guru Hamish McKay for his rundown of the week's biggest sporting moments, what's coming up on the weekend and everything in between.

McKay told George despite the Black Ferns rampant 50 - 0 drubbing of their Trans-Tasman foes on Thursday, the public support for the women's game doesn't appear to have continued since the World Cup last year.

"It's good to see that the rugby momentum has carried on for the Black Ferns," he said.

"Unfortunately, the public support momentum hasn't because if the world cup was an indicator, everybody across the country should have been crowded around their tellies last night."

The U20 men's team unfortunately didn't fare as well, going down 35 - 14 to France U20 in the World Rugby U20 Championship but McKay said there were definitely positives to take out of the loss.

"We were actually really competitive at scrum time.

"From 28 - 0 down we showed some intestinal fortitude to climb back into it.I'd say there was credit in the performance."

The One NZ Warriors were also in action on Friday evening and despite the rather unfortunate result in equally as shocking weather, the sold-out game and free-to-air TV coverage shone brightly through the darkness.

"It might cost TV3 tonight to promote that but it will do them no end of good in the world of karma, so good on them for having whatever deal they have with Sky to have this game.

"Spark Sport it's just too tricky, too much hard work, it's all gone to TVNZ so watch this space there's going to be a hell of a lot more free-to-air-sport."

George and McKay talked more about the second Ashes cricket test between England and Australia and the multiple Kiwis competing in the Lausanne Diamond League over the weekend.
