Liam Payne’s death has been a heart-breaking event worldwide. For many dedicated supporters, they took yesterday as an opportunity to celebrate the late singer’s life with fan-led tributes all over the globe, including New Zealand.
Kiwi fans came together at Auckland’s Freyberg Square, bringing photos, notes, and mementos to remember the former One Direction star.
TikToker @7dovey7 shared a video of the memorial, showing candles, friendship bracelets, merchandise, and handwritten letters.
The caption read: “Can’t stand the fact you left this world, Liam.😒 We will always remember you!”
In a follow-up clip, they added, it “was a BEAUTIFUL day for Liam’s memorial,” showing fans writing personal notes.
Tributes like these were planned globally, spreading through social media as fans came together to publicly mourn Payne's sudden death.
Across the ditch, fans gathered at the One Direction plaque at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena to honour Payne.
In Glasgow’s George Square, hundreds of people lay flowers and mementos while singing One Direction songs as a tribute to the late singer.
It was spread far and wide, with thousands meeting in Paris’ Jardin des Tuileries to pay their respects.
London’s Hyde Park was also packed with fans, many carrying flowers and balloons in memory of Payno.
"There are a lot of people upset and it's a good time for us to come together and be with people who understand," organiser Alicia Sinclair told BBC.
So for me, it feels like, I guess like the end of us growing up together. That's what makes it so hard.
And she’s not alone in that.
Payne will be remembered not just by those closest to him, but by an entire generation that grew up idolising and adoring him.
