Hell just unveiled a Hāngi pizza with pork belly, kumara and smoky stuffing as toppings

HELL just created a special pizza to celebrate Te Wiki o te reo Māori with help from the Hāngī Master Rewi Spraggon.

They’re calling it the ‘Unearthed’ pizza, fitting, because it’s inspired by the centuries long tradition of cooking fresh Aotearoa produce in hāngī pits.

And that’s what they’ve made sure to include by using locally sourced, including pork belly, kumara, a pumpkin and kawakawa puree, and smoky stuffing, all cooked in Rewi’s Auckland-based hāngī pits.

“Hāngī is soul food at its best - translated, it means the essence of life and the internal spark of mother nature,” says Rewi.

Since kicking off his Hāngī Master biz, Rewi’s spent the last eight years keeping the traditional Māori cooking technique alive and sharing it with the world, from China and Japan to Canada.

But with this latest kai, they’re keen to bring in a whole new crowd of Kiwi hāngī fans across the motu.

“Pizza is one of those foods made for sharing, like hāngī, so we’re excited to bring the two together,” HELL founder Callum Davies says.

This is unlike any pizza we’ve made before.

“It’s delicious and brings people together, which I hope Unearthed will do for New Zealanders who may not have tasted hāngī before,” Rewi adds.
