Old mate Fred again is yet AGAIN giving us something to smile about. In a new chat with Nardwuar (a Canadian journalist who leaves no stone unturned when interviewing his guests), the pair yarn about Fred’s history, production easter eggs and music endeavours.
Right off the bat Nardwuar gets into his signature gift giving with a record that Fred played on the drums as a 10 year old. It then comes out that Fred's own Dad started a journey into being a drummer because of it. Absolutely stunned and struggling to find words, Fred says:
Straight out the gate you’ve spun me out.
Another vinyl is gifted and is ID’d as a sample of Fred's tune ‘adore you’.
We also get to learn about how ‘Fred Again’ came to be, with Nardwuar bringing up his old producer name and how his guitar teacher at age 12 introduced him to the DAW Logic.
And that was kind of the beginning of the greatest love affair of my life.
Nardwuar dug deeper by mentioning “a cello made of trains” which randomly opened a huge can of worms about the producers comradery with legendary Brian Eno. Fred loses it, questioning how he knew that inside joke “because that's a private conversation with me and Brian”.
The famous “Boiler Room bump” was brought up. A staple moment in dance music live recorded sets; punter Rodney bumped Fred's CDJ mid mix, pausing the tune. Nardwuar seemed to also know that Fred then BUMPED into him when leaving a video shoot.
In true Fred Again fashion, he then returns the gift giving favour with a card addressed to Nardwuar with a wholesome handwritten message reading:
Thank you for inspiring a sense of wonder in me & all my friends and for being such a rare example of aaaalways being so uncompromisingly yourself in every room you’re in.
What a dude!
